The Island of the Dolls Originally known as La Isla de las Muñecas (The Island of the Dolls) is located in the south of the center of Mexico City in a place called Xochimilco. The Island is very close to a football stadium named Estadio Azteca. The stadium is very popular and is one of the main points of attraction for the public and tourists as well.
The Dolls were placed by the former owner, Julian of this controversial Island. It was said that a girl drowned in the Island many years before and her spirit is still making the rounds in the places closer to the Island. So, to keep the spirit of the girl at bay, the owner of the Island, Julian placed dolls of various styles, colors and sizes. It was believed that the dolls kept the spirit of the girl away.
However, in the year, Julian died of a heart attack and the close sources revealed that he was found at the very same spot where the girl died, many years before.

History of The Island of the Dolls
The owner of the Island, Don Julian started hanging the dolls, somewhere around the 1950s. He started to hang the dolls in the first place keeping in mind that the dolls are sure to keep the spirit of the dead girl at bay. It was said that the dolls helped in keeping the evil spirits away protecting the people who lived around the Island.
Julian sold vegetables and after selling the veggies, he went to his neighbour’s home and drank a special alcohol that was traditional in all parts of Central Mexico. But as Superstition started creeping over him, he began to deliver the speech of the holy book, Bible.
According to the sources, the young girl was found dead on the banks of Santampa Chinampas where her body was wrapped among the lilies of the side by the canal. After the death of the girl, Julian started experiencing uneventful situations and then he came up with an idea of placing the dolls that he found in the garbage in order to scare the spirit of the girl who came in the search of her doll, saying- I want my doll.

He even found the doll of the girl and placed it on the tree as a sign of respect and memory. After doing all these arrangements, Dan Julian started hearing footsteps and whispers although his home was located miles away from the Island of the Dolls. He spent all the remaining years of his life hanging enough of the dolls in the Island in order to scare the girl by these filthy dolls.
In the year 1943, the Island started gaining popularity when a Mexican Filmmaker, Emilio Fernandez filmed a scene of his movie in the Island. In 1987, a tourist rescue was made on the Island where the Island was found covered with the water lily. After the rescue and the death of Dan Julian the place became a tourist spot. Many local and international news channels started writing and presenting articles and news on the Island of the Dolls. Travel Channel, ABC News, The Huffington Post and many others started featuring the mysterious story of the Island of the Dolls.
After the death of Dan Julian in the year 2001, the area became more and more popular with the passing of time and it gained the eyeballs of the tourists thus becoming a favorite tourist spot. It was said that Dan Julian’s body was found at the very same place where the body of the girl was found, somewhere 50 years back.

The foreign travellers claim to hear the whispers from the Island whereas the local residents describe the place as charmed and not haunted. People who have seen the Island claim that they witness thousands of Dolls, hanging from the trees.
